New Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 Priced From £155k In The UK, Nearly £16k More Than 751HP Taycan Turbo S

Two months ago, Mercedes unveiled the AMG EQS 53 at the Munich Motor Show as the first electric vehicle to wear the AMG badge. Now, the German automaker has released pricing for it, and it’s about what you’d expect for a range-topping high-performance EV sedan.

The EQS 53 will start at £154,995 (equal to around $208,000 at current exchange rates) in the UK, or 55% more than the base EQS 450’s starting price of £99,995. It’s also more expensive than the current flagship Porsche Taycan Turbo S that’s rated for 761PS / 751HP and kicks off from £139,280 (about $186,900).

For that money, you get a dual-motor AWD drivetrain producing 649 hp (658 PS / 484 kW) and 701 lb-ft (950 Nm) of instant electric torque. Upgrade to the AMG Performance Package with the Night Edition that pushes the starting price to £163,900 (around $220,000) though, and that same drivetrain produces 751 hp (761 PS / 560 kW) and 752 lb-ft (1020 Nm) of torque.

The former enables a 3.8-second sprint to 62 mph (100 km/h) with a top speed of 137 mph (220 km/h), while the latter allows for 3.4 seconds to 62 mph with a top speed of 155 mph (249 km/h). The range is the same for both, with a WLTP-estimated 358 miles (576 km) on tap from the car’s 107.8 kWh battery.

Standard features on all variants include the 56-inch Hyperscreen, an AR heads-up display, Nappa leather upholstery, a Burmester® surround sound system, a Parking package with Active Parking Assist, and 360° camera, Driving Assistance Package Plus, AMG sound programs, AMG-specific bodywork, and an AMG steering wheel.

Included with the Night Edition are 21-inch AMG alloy wheels, a flat-bottomed sport steering wheel, and sport pedals. Upgrading to the £8,995 AMG Performance Package (which is only available with the Night Edition) gets you carbon-ceramic brakes, AMG Dynamic Plus boost for Race Start, the AMG Sound Experience, the AMG Driver’s Package with increased top speed, AMG TRACK PACE, and AMG carbon-fiber interior trim.

Finally, serving as a counterpart to the bold Night Edition is the more subtle Touring specification, which comes with 22-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels and elegant ambient lighting in the cabin. On top of that, you can opt for the £2,995 Rear Luxury Lounge package (only available with the Touring), which outfits the multi-contour rear seats with black Exclusive Nappa leather upholstery, power reclining, luxury headrests, neck and shoulder heating, comfort armrests, separate climate controls, an MBUX tablet, wireless charging, and additional USB ports.

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ is currently on sale now, with the first UK deliveries expected to arrive in April 2022.

Facelifted 2023 Mercedes-AMG A35 Spied Hiding Mild Visual Changes

We have already seen a few camouflaged prototypes of the upcoming facelifted A-Class, but this time our spy photographers provided us with a set of pictures showing the updated Mercedes-AMG A35 4MATIC.

The light camouflage on the front end is hiding sharper LED graphics for the headlights, a new grille, and a slightly redesigned front bumper with AMG-style intakes. At the back, changes seem to be limited to the taillights since the uncovered rear bumper is keeping the diffuser, the vertical inlets, and the dual tailpipes of the current model.

The facelifted A-Class range is also expected to get interior updates with the dual-screen integrating a newer version of the MBUX infotainment. Since this is a mid-life facelift and not a new generation, it is unlikely that the hatchback will get Mercedes’ new screen layout which at the moment is reserved for higher segments.

Mechanical changes will probably be limited since the model is only three years old. The A35 might not be the top-of-the-range hot hatch coming from Affalterbach, as that title belongs to the A45 S, but it is still pretty fast. The current version is fitted with a turbocharged 2,0-liter engine producing 301 hp (225 kW / 306 PS) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, allowing a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) acceleration in 4.7 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h).

We will learn more about the updated Mercedes-AMG A35 4MATIC in the coming months, with a possible reveal in 2022. Rivals include the BMW M135i xDrive and the Audi S3, both of which have similar power outputs and all-wheel-drive systems.

While new electric vehicles are coming thick and fast, there are still heaps of driver-focused ICE performance cars on the market and they come in all shapes and sizes. In the compact category, for instance, you can get your kicks by choosing the BMW M2 CS, the Audi RS3, or the Mercedes-AMG A 45 S.

Sure, these cars are out of the price range of many people, but they all deliver excellent performance. CarWow recently pitted them against each other to see which is the quickest.

As standard, it is the M2 CS that has the advantage over the other two. Its twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six is good for 444 hp and 406 lb-ft (550 Nm) of torque and is coupled to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission sending power to the rear wheels.

The Mercedes-AMG A45 S has the smallest engine of the bunch, in the form of a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 415 hp and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque. It is also all-wheel drive and has an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

As for the Audi RS3 tested, it is actually a 2016 model and has been equipped with some modifications so it now produces 450 hp and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) of torque.

Off the line, it comes as no surprise that the all-wheel drive Audi and Mercedes-AMG have the advantage. However, as the speeds start to increase, the BMW claws its way back and speeds past the Mercedes-AMG and is only narrowly defeated by the tuned Audi, while in a rolling drag race, the M2 CS easily defeated both the RS3 and the A 45 S.

Aston Martin Replacing Andy Palmer As CEO With AMG’s Tobias Moers

Andy Palmer is being dramatically sacked as the chief executive of Aston Martin as the British marque’s share price continues to fall.

An official announcement will be made on Tuesday as part of a serious shakeup at the automaker. The Guardian understands that Palmer will be replaced by the current chief executive of Mercedes-AMG, Tobias Moers.

Palmer has served as the head of Aston Martin since 2014 having previously had a long tenure at Nissan and Infiniti. He has been instrumental in the launch of the DBX SUV as well as Aston Martin’s forthcoming fleet of mid-engined supercars and hypercar, the Valkyrie, Valhalla, and Vanquish.

Despite this work, Aston Martin’s shares have collapsed since its October 2018 public listing and seen the company’s market valuation fall from more than £4 billion ($4.87 billion) to £562 million ($684 million) on Friday.

Aston Martin announced earlier this month that its losses had ballooned to £119 million ($144 million) in the first three months of the year in response to the coronavirus pandemic. The company sold just 578 cars to dealerships in the first quarter, a 45 per cent drop from the same period in 2019.

In a statement issued on Sunday, an Aston Martin spokesman confirmed the company “is reviewing its management team and a further announcement will be made as and when appropriate.”

As for Moers, he has been the head of Mercedes-AMG since late 2013 and overseen the diversification of the performance brand’s product portfolio and the launch of its F1-powered Mercedes-AMG One hybrid hypercar.
