This Is How The 2023 Chevy Corvette Z06’s N/A V8 Delivers 670 HP

Written by admin

The 2023 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 was unveiled earlier in the week and promises to be unlike any other ‘Vette before it, largely thanks to its engine.

We have known that the C8 Z06 would feature a 5.5-liter naturally-aspirated V8 ever since the Corvette C8.R race car was unveiled with this same basic engine in October 2019. Recent rumors suggested the engine would be tuned to around the 617 hp mark for the Z06, so you can imagine our surprise when the car was announced with no less than 670 hp and 460 lb-ft (623 Nm).

That horsepower figure makes this 5.5-liter flat-plane crank engine the most powerful naturally-aspirated V8 ever used by a production car. It also gives the new car a 20 hp advantage over the 6.2-liter supercharged V8 used by the C7 Z06. Just how was Chevy able to extract so much power from this smaller-capacity engine without relying on forced induction?

To show how this was achieved, Engineering Explained has released an intriguing video that details all of the technology packed into this engine.

A key reason why the engine is so powerful is that it revs to 8,600 rpm and achieves peak power at 8,400 rpm, 2,000 rpm higher than the C7’s 6.2-liter V8. The car’s high-revving nature has been achieved through the use of a flat-plane crankshaft and the use of a short stroke.

Chevrolet has also engineered the engine with double-overhead cams and four valves per cylinder. It also featured dual valve springs, solid lifts, titanium intake valves, and sodium-filled steel exhaust valves. A complex intake manifold has also been designed with dual throttle bodies, dual plenums, three center valves, and four trumpets on each side.

2005 Corvette C6 From Lingenfelter Is A Mean, 665 HP Machine

Written by admin

The exterior designs of the C7 and C8-generation Chevrolet Corvette are quite radical compared to their predecessors but if you want a ‘Vette with a slightly more classic shape, this example could be right up your alley.

Obviously, this isn’t just any old C6 Corvette. Instead, the car has been comprehensively modified by Lingenfelter to dramatically increase its performance.

The car’s standard 6.0-liter LS2 V8 has been modified by Lingenfelter Performance and fitted with an Edelbrock E-Force TVS 2300 supercharger, an air to water intercooler, ported LS2 cylinder heads, a Comp Cams GT9 camshaft, high-flow fuel injectors, a high-flow air intake, a 160-degree thermostat, and a stainless steel 2.5-inch exhaust with Corsa mufflers. It pumps out 665 hp which are sent to the rear wheels courtesy of a four-speed automatic transmission.

These modifications alone would be enough to make this Corvette special but the Supervettes ZR6X bodykit makes it stand out even further, giving the car a menacing stance on the road thanks to flared wheel arches, a ZR1 front splitter, vented hood, side skirts, a rear spoiler, and a new rear bumper and diffuser. The car also sits on staggered-width Forestar F14 20-inch forged wheels wrapped in 295/25 front and 345/25 rear Nitto Invo tires.

Elsewhere, a set of coilovers have been installed as have new front and rear swaybars and a camber kit. Braking is provided by Z06 six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers.

The car is listed up for auction through Bring A Trailer and has just 6,000 miles (~9,600 km) on the clock.

2K-Mile 2013 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 Is An Exhilarating Drive

Written by admin

Sure, the C6-generation Chevrolet Corvette may not have quite the allure of the mid-engined C8, but in ZR1 guise, it is still a superb value proposition for the performance it provides.

The Corvette ZR1 in question is a 2013 model and while it is almost a decade old, it has only been driven 2,000 miles (3,200 km). The car is listed up for auction through Bring A Trailer and was one of 482 ZR1s built for the 2013 model year and one of just 27 finished in Crystal Red Metallic.

Contrasting the red paint are chrome-finished 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels clad in the original 285/30 and 335/25 Michelin Pilot Sport tires respectively. The car also rocks a carbon fiber hood, roof, fenders, floor panels, side skirts, and front splitter.

A peek inside the cabin reveals Cashmere leather on the center of the seats and across parts of the dashboard and door panels. The ‘Vette also features various black leather components and is equipped with the 3ZR Premium Equipment Group that includes power-adjustable and heated sport seats, a memory package, Bose audio, navigation, Bluetooth, dual-zone automatic climate control, a head-up display, and cruise control.

Powering the C6 Corvette ZR1 is a supercharged 6.2-liter LS9 V8 pumping out 638 hp and 604 lb-ft (819 Nm) of torque that’s mated to a six-speed manual transmission driving the rear wheels through a limited-slip differential.

Camaro Steering Wheel Badge Could Pose Danger To Drivers, Leads To Recall Of 30 Cars

Written by admin

We’ve seen safety campaigns conducted for a million reasons, yet the latest, in which the badge on the steering wheel could become a projectile in an accident for a few unlucky Camaro owners, is certainly unusual.

According to a recall notice sent out by General Motors and first noticed by GM Authority, the Camaro emblem on the steering wheel could become a problem because it may not have been properly molded. That could mean they don’t stay affixed to the steering wheel as well as they should.

In case of an accident, the Camaro badge could come unstuck from the wheel, turning into a projectile and increasing the risk of injury during a collision. Fortunately, GM is unaware of any injuries as a result of this manufacturing error.

In more good news, only 30 vehicles are being included in the recall. Curiously, they don’t appear to have been built consecutively. GM has flagged Camaros from every model year since 2017 as being involved in the recall.

If you would like to know whether or not your Camaro is affected, you can enter your VIN number in GM’s recall website. If your car is included, GM will notify you and set up an appointment at your nearest dealer.

The repair will be relatively simple, if extensive, as GM will replace the entire driver-side airbag module at no cost to the owner.

In other Camaro-related news, in the first quarter of 2021, it came in last in the pony car charts. Its sales were dwarfed by both the Ford Mustang and the Dodge Challenger, with the former easily doubling the Camaro’s sales and the latter getting pretty close to doubling them, too.

Driven: The 2021 Chevrolet Suburban Diesel Is An Unlikely Green Machine

Written by admin

Diesel engines have been around for more than a century, but they’ve gotten a bad reputation thanks to a series of scandals.

This, combined with the shift to electric vehicles, has resulted in a number of diesel-powered models falling by the wayside. However, the truck segment has bucked the trend as diesel engines remain popular in heavy duty models and have even trickled down to their mainstream counterparts.

General Motors is going one step further as the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe / Suburban, GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade will be offered a 3.0-liter Duramax turbodiesel inline-six. This is an interesting move as it’s the only diesel in the segment.

We recently spent some time with the diesel-powered Chevrolet Suburban and it’s clear the engine is a welcome addition to the lineup.

Don’t Let The Horsepower Rating Fool You

The 3.0-liter Duramax turbodiesel inline-six produces 277 hp (207 kW / 281 PS) and 460 lb-ft (624 Nm) of torque, but that doesn’t sound like much when compared to the 5.3- and 6.2-liter V8s. The former churns out 355 hp (265 kW / 360 PS) and 383 lb-ft (519 Nm) of torque, while the latter develops 420 hp (313 kW / 426 PS) and 460 lb-ft (624 Nm).

While the diesel looks underpowered on paper, it’s more than adequate to propel the Suburban which weighs 6,072 lbs (2,754 kg) with four-wheel drive. Thanks to the copious amount of torque, the model accelerates at a reasonable pace.

It’s been a few months since we tested the GMC Yukon AT4 with the 5.3-liter V8, but the diesel engine seems to offer similar performance in the real world. The diesel is likely a bit slower, but you never get the feeling you’re driving an underpowered school bus. That being said, you might wish for some extra oomph when it comes time to merge onto the highway.

Surprisingly Efficient

Diesel engines are known for their efficiency and the Duramax doesn’t disappoint as the Suburban returns 21 mpg city, 27 mpg highway and 23 mpg combined with rear-wheel drive and 20 mpg city, 26 mpg highway and 22 mpg combined with four-wheel drive.

To put those numbers into perspective, the 5.3-liter V8 Suburban is rated at 16 mpg city, 20 mpg highway and 18 mpg combined with rear-wheel drive. That drops to 15 city, 19 mpg highway and 17 mpg combined with four-wheel drive.

Crunching the numbers, that’s a difference of 5 mpg city, 7 mpg highway and 5 mpg combined for both models. Those are sizable gains and it’s kind of crazy when you think about a three ton SUV returning 27 mpg.

In our short time with the Suburban, we averaged 24.4 mpg with a mix of city and highway driving. That’s pretty impressive and the number would be higher if we hadn’t left the vehicle idling while taking photos and video, although a start/stop system helps to save fuel.

The Ultimate SUV For Towing?

Diesel engines are great for towing and the Suburban seems like an ideal vehicle for hauling your family, equipment and a boat up north for a weekend at the lake. In terms of numbers, the model has a maximum towing capacity of 8,000 lbs (3,629 kg) and a max payload of 1,625 lbs (737 kg). If that’s not enough, the Tahoe ups that to 8,200 lbs (3,719 kg) and 1,717 lbs (779 kg).

While the gasoline-powered models can tow more, the diesels have a standard exhaust brake which can be accessed by using tow-haul mode. It’s designed to give drivers more confidence when towing, especially downhill.

A Civilized Diesel

The diesel engine largely carries over from the Silverado, but engineers made several modifications for use in the Tahoe and Suburban. Among the changes are revised software and “noise abatements” to keep the cabin quiet.

Speaking of the latter, the engine is hushed even outside the vehicle. While it’s unmistakably a diesel, it’s not the ‘wake your neighbors’ type found in older heavy duty trucks. The noise is less pronounced in the cabin and you can’t even tell it’s a diesel at highway speeds.

An Affordable Upgrade

While diesel engines are typically expensive, the Duramax only costs an additional $995. On the range-topping High Country trim, which comes standard with the 6.2-liter V8, it actually saves buyers $1,500. That’s pretty reasonable and it makes the diesel a tempting option, especially when compared with the 5.3-liter V8.

The diesel might not appeal to everyone, but it’s an interesting addition to the lineup and offers impressive fuel economy ratings. It also delivers decent performance, quick start ups and all the capability the Suburban is renowned for.

Mitsubishi Outlander And Eclipse Cross Are The Slowest-Selling New Vehicles In The U.S.

Written by admin

The two slowest-selling new vehicles in the United States are both Mitsubishis, a new study has found.

During a recent analysis of 4.4 million new and used vehicles sold throughout the United States in the period from March through June 2020, it was discovered that the Mitsubishi Outlander and Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross are the slowest-selling new vehicles in the country. On average, it takes 197.7 days for an Outlander and 187.7 days for an Eclipse Cross to sell.

It is hardly a surprise that the Mitsubishi Outlander is so difficult to shift as it has been in production in third-generation guise, with minimal changes, since 2014 and there are many newer and more modern alternatives on the market.

Speaking about it, iSeeCars chief executive Phong Ly said: “The Mitsubishi Outlander compact SUV saw a 76 percent decrease in sales in the second quarter of 2020 compared to 2019, which shows that there isn’t high demand for the vehicle, despite its affordability and unique features like a third-row seat.”

It is somewhat of a surprise to see the Eclipse Cross so high up on the list, though, as it is still relatively new. However, like other Mitsubishi models, it is extremely basic and clearly failing to cash-in on demand for SUVs and crossovers in the United States.

The third slowest-selling new vehicle is the Buick Encore with an average sale time of 170 days. It was followed by the Nissan Frontier (158.3 days), Chevrolet Impala (153.1 days), Nissan Altima (151.9 days), Nissan Armada (151.2 days), Cadillac Escalade ESV (151.1 days), Range Rover Velar (150.4 days), and the Infiniti QX60 (149.9 days.)

It sure is not good for car manufacturers to have their new vehicles sitting around for so long. On the flip side, shoppers may find some good savings with such vehicles as dealerships should be eager to get them off their lots.

This C4 Corvette Is So Low It Can Actually Drift Under A Truck

Written by admin

The C4 Chevrolet Corvette is a very low sports car, although we doubt that, in stock form, it can drive under a semi-truck.

This Corvette is owned by an Instagram user with the very apt username of c4drifter and reportedly sits at a mere 43 inches (1.09 meters) tall, as opposed to the 46.7 inches (1,19 meters) of the standard car. With a healthy dose of right foot, it is also capable of some pretty nice drifts.

We’ve seen cars drifting and sliding under trucks in the past, including the Fast & Furious films. In addition, stunt driver Tanner Foust performed a beautiful J-turn under a truck roughly 12 months ago while driving a Genesis G70, although we suspect the truck’s suspension was raised up so the sports sedan could fit underneath it.

The trailer of this particular truck appears to be far lower and would clearly be far too low for pretty much any car on the market. In fact, it looks as though this ‘Vette is only just low enough to fit under.

A host of modifications have been made to this Corvette to make it so capable when driven beyond the limits of grip. Most notably, some obvious suspension changes have been made to lower the ride height while also allowing the driver to apply more steering lock than normal. In addition, the sports car has been equipped with a hydraulic handbrake so the rear end can be kicked out at a moment’s notice.

Buick Velite 7 Electric SUV Previewed In China, Could Herald America’s Chevy Bolt EUV

Written by admin

Buick has provided a first official glimpse into the Velite 7, its first all-electric SUV which will launch in China later this year.

Joining the likes of the Velite 5 extended range and Velite 6 and Velite 6 Plus electric vehicles, it is believed to be based on the Chevrolet Bolt. While the Velite 7 is a China-only affair, a Chevy-rebadged derivative should find its way to the United States eventually.

A modular lithium-ion battery, with an optimized design and improved cell chemistry, powers the Velite 7’s zero-emission propulsion system.

The Buick Velite 7 features a liquid-cooling battery thermal management system, which is said to meet General Motors’ global standards for safety and reliability. More importantly, it promises a range of up to 310 miles (500 km), albeit under the very optimistic NEDC test cycle. This will likely drop to around 200 miles (320 km) in the real world.

“Buick is strengthening its EV lineup with an all-new entry for today’s consumers, giving them the functionality of an SUV and the confidence to go farther with an impressive 500 kilometers of range”, commented the executive director of Buick Sales and Marketing at SAIC-GM, Molly Peck. “We topped it off with a suite of leading technologies to meet the needs of progressive and eco-minded Chinese drivers.”

Further details will be announced closer to the electric SUV’s launch, but previous reports have indicated the Velite 7 is 167.9 inches (4,264 mm) long and has a 105.3-inch (2,675-mm) wheelbase. The electric motor allegedly develops 174 horsepower, but America’s variant, which will be dubbed the Bolt EUV (Electric Utility Vehicle), is expected with more than 200 HP.
