Glorious Past Meets High-Tech Present In Ferrari F40 Vs. McLaren P1 Race

We never thought we’d say this, but a quarter-mile sprint isn’t always about the result; sometimes it is about the journey.

The Ferrari F40 and McLaren P1 are separated by almost three decades of engineering, so we all know which one got to see the chequered flag first.

The F40 is one of the most iconic models to have ever come out. It was the last Ferrari approved by Enzo himself and it hit the assembly line in 1987, succeeding the 288 GTO. A little over 1,300 units were made until 1992, when production ended.

The twin turbocharged, 2.9-liter V8 produced 471-horsepower and 426 pound-feet (577 Nm) of torque, driving the rear wheels though a five-speed manual transmission. It can hit 201 mph (323 km/h) and the 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) sprint is impressive even by today’s standards, as it takes just a little over 4 seconds.

Although it seems like yesterday we first laid eyes on the P1, McLaren’s hypercar is already seven years old. Nevertheless, it is still mighty powerful and fast.

Power is supplied by a twin-turbo 3.8-liter V8 and an in-house developed electric motor, for a total output of 903 HP and 664 lb-ft (900 Nm) of torque. The 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) sprint is dealt with in 2.8 seconds and top speed is 217 mph (350 km/h).

Audi S8 And Bentley Flying Spur Do Donuts, Drag Race Each Other

It is highly unusual to see flagship limos such as the Audi S8 and Bentley Flying Spur warm up their tires by doing donuts before engaging in a series of races, but that’s exactly what they did here.

The fourth-gen A8 is based on the MLB Evo platform, which is also used in the Lamborghini Urus and Volkswagen Touareg, to name but two, while the third-gen Flying Spur uses the MSB architecture which it shares with the Continental GT and Porsche Panamera.

With a starting price of £170,000 ($216,595) in the UK, where this video was shot, the Flying Spur is powered by a twin-turbo, 6.0-liter W12 engine that delivers 626 HP (635 PS / 467 kW) and 664 lb-ft (900 Nm) of torque. It has an eight-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive, weighs around 5,500 pounds (2.5 tons), needs 3.8 seconds to sprint to 62 mph (100 km/h) from a standstill and reaches a maximum speed of 207 mph (333 km/h).

The S8 can be bought from £100,000 ($127,410) in Great Britain and is approximately 440 lbs (200 kg) lighter than the Bentley. It is powered by a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 with 563 HP (571 PS / 420 kW) and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm), directed to the quattro all-wheel drive system through an eight-speed tiptronic transmission. This enables a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) acceleration of under 4 seconds and a top speed that’s electronically restricted to 155 mph (250 km/h).

The two limos raced each other both from a standing and a rolling start, in Comfort and Sport driving modes, and also performed a brake test. So, which one do you think came out on top?

BMW M2 CS And Porsche Cayman GT4 Vie For Straight-Line Speed Honors

While supercar manufacturers continue to engage in a seemingly never-ending horsepower war, it’s good to know that there are still some sports cars that aren’t all about on-paper performance but are instead focused on driving thrills. Take the BMW M2 CS and Porsche Cayman GT4, for example.

While the M2 CS and the Cayman GT4 represent the flagship variants of their respective bloodlines, they are not solely focused on crazy output numbers and lap times. Instead, they offer just the right amount of power that can actually be used on the street. However, performance cannot be overlooked, which begs the question which of the two is the fastest.

To find out, Lovecars recently conducted a drag race between the M2 CS and the Cayman GT4. It’s worth pointing out the GT4 featured is the 981-generation model and not the latest iteration. Nevertheless, it is an absolute pleasure to drive.

As the M2 CS uses a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six with 444 hp and 406 lb-ft (550 Nm) of torque, it has a significant power advantage over the Cayman GT4 that is powered by a naturally aspirated 3.8-liter flat-six with 380 hp and 310 lb-ft (420 Nm). Both are rear-wheel drive and are fitted with six-speed manual transmissions.

In theory, then, the M2 CS is faster than the Cayman GT4, so did it manage to beat the Porsche in a straight line?

McLaren 720S, Lamborghini Huracan, Ferrari 812 And Ferrari 488 Pista Engage In Battle Royale

Supercars are getting ever faster and the cars featured in this particular clip all offer truly frightening levels of acceleration. However, which of them is the fastest?

To find out, YouTuber 888MF teamed up with BOTB in the UK for a series of drag races. The cars featured are a pair of McLaren 720S’ (one fitted with an aftermarket exhaust), a Ferrari 488 Pista, a Lamborghini Huracan Performante, and a Ferrari 812 Superfast.

Kicking things off is a race between the Lamborghini and the 488 Pista. Thanks to its all-wheel drive system, the Huracan gets off the line quicker but because it has less power, the Ferrari storms past it before the finish line.

In the second race, the victorious 488 Pista lines up against the 812 Superfast and, despite being one tier lower in Ferrari’s hierarchy, the twin-turbocharged V8 488 out-accelerated the V12-powered grand tourer.

Then it was the turn of the McLarens, which lined up alongside each other and the 488 Pista for a battle of supremacy. During both races, the owner of the 720S with the aftermarket exhaust rocketed off the line much quicker than his rivals and came out the victor.

However, things don’t end there as a surprise competitor then joins the party in the form of a Porsche Taycan Turbo S. The all-electric super saloon has established itself as one of the most accelerative vehicles on the planet and can hit 62 mph (100 km/h) in under 2.5 seconds. The question is, is that enough to upstage the 720S?

Audi’s RS4 Avant Can Easily Outperform The BMW M340i Touring, Right?

Logic would dictate that the Audi RS4 Avant is significantly faster than the BMW M340i Touring in a straight line. However, official figures oftentimes only tell half of the story and there’s nothing like real-world testing in order to reach a verdict.

Until the latest-generation BMW M3 hits showroom floors, the German brand is without a direct rival to the Audi RS4 and, for now, the mid-tier M340i is the next best thing. And while it is not a fully-fledged M model, it is still capable of some proper performance.

Driving the M340i sedan and Touring models is a 3.0-liter turbocharged straight-six engine pumping out 369 hp and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque. Coupled to this engine is an eight-speed Steptronic transmission powering all four wheels through BMW’s xDrive system. BMW’s official claim is that the car can hit 62 mph (100 km/h) in a mere 4.4 seconds and continue through to a 155 mph (250 km/h) top speed.

By comparison, the Audi RS4 Avant features a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 rated at 444 hp and 443 lb-ft (600 Nm) of torque. In a recent test, CarWow recorded a 0-60 mph (96 km/h) time of just 3.6 seconds in it.

However, in the first of three drag races held between the BMW and the Audi, it was the M340i that got a better launch and retained its lead down the quarter-mile. Maybe that was a one-time thing, though, so did the more powerful RS4 Avant manage to beat the BMW in the subsequent races from a standstill, the rolling races and braking tests?
