Mazda3 And CX-30 Get Mild Updates In Japan Including New Special Editions

Written by admin

After the Mazda CX-3 Super Edgy, the automaker announced a series of special trim levels of the Mazda3 and the CX-30 in Japan, alongside small updates on the e-SkyActiv X motor.

Those include tweaking the intake port and exhaust silencer of the gasoline engine to produce a richer sound for spicing up the driving experience during acceleration. Additionally, engineers have updated the gas pedal feel for a greater “sense of unity with the car”. As a refresher, the e-SkyActiv X is a mild-hybrid 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 183 hp (137 kW / 186 PS) and 240 Nm (177 lb-ft) of torque.

In terms of the new trim levels, the Smart Edition is available for models equipped with the e-Skyactiv X engine. It brings more comfort and safety equipment including an active driving display, smart brake support, high beam control system, lane keep assist, and blind-spot monitoring.

Meanwhile the Black Tone Edition, which is available for all powertrain variants of both models, is visually differentiated by the black 18-inch aluminum wheels, the gloss-black mirrors, and the red stitching inside the cabin.

The pictured Mazda CX-30 Black Tone Edition is fitted with optional aero components including the bumper and side-sill extensions.

Following the example of the more recent CX-30, all Mazda3 models get a new dimming turn signal which, according to Mazda, gives “a sense of life” in the car. Last but not least, the Platinum Quartz Metallic is a new color option for the Mazda3 and the CX-30, while the Polymetal Gray Metallic is added to the palette of the Mazda3 Sedan.

Orders for the mildly updated Mazda3 and CX-30 are open in Japan as of today, with vehicles arriving in dealerships in late November.

New Mazda MX-5 990S Edition Is A Pure, No-Frills Sports Car That Weighs Just 990 KG But It’s Only For Japan

Written by admin

Long heralded as the ultimate drivers car, one of the Mazda MX-5 Miata’s greatest advantages has always been its low weight. Japanese customers are set to get even lower weight thanks to the newly unveiled 990S trim.

The new edition is named after the weight of the vehicle, which Car Watch reports has been reduced to an NA Miata-rivaling 990 kg (2,182 lbs). The model rivals the original Miata in simplicity, too, having had nearly every frill removed.

Mazda achieved the weight reductions in a number of ways, including ridding the car of sound deadening and by ligthening the hood. It also gets lightweight wheels that remove 3.2 kg (7 lbs) and Brembo brakes that help remove 700 g (1.5 lbs) despite being bigger at the front.

Although that less than 10 lbs of weight savings between the wheels and brakes may not sound like an astounding amount, Mazda‘s engineers say that 1 kg (2.2 lbs) of unsprung mass is the equivalent of 10 kg (22 lbs) of sprung mass when it comes to cars.

To alert passersby to the lightweighting efforts of its engineers, Mazda has opted to swap the red brake calipers for black ones with blue “Brembo” script. The blue theme follows on the A/C vents and the soft top fabric.

It’s not all stripping, though, Mazda has added a new feature that might scare some purists, but excite engineers. Vehicle Attitude Stabilization Control is a new handling technology designed to control lean in corners.

The car does this by applying a minimal amount of brake pressure to the rear inner wheel when the it senses more than 0.3 G of cornering forces. It works to suppress wheel lift up and keep the vehicle flatter through the corners. Whether or not drivers will like it remains to be seen, but Mazda worked to ensure that drivers felt no discomfort while using the system that replicates the experiences of using an electronically controlled suspension. It can be turned off by turning off DSC.

Based on the least powerful version of the car, the 990S gets the 130 hp (132 PS/97 kW) 1.5-liter engine with the open differential. Since the bigger 2.0-liter engine requires heavier duty parts to deal with the extra power, it won’t be offered with the lightweight package. But according to Shigeki Saito, the development chief for the 990S, that’s not a problem.

“Horsepower and fun are not proportional, but lightness and fun are proportional,” he told Car Watch (as translated by Google). “The lighter the car, the more fun it is. If you enjoy driving, I think this roadster is the best right now.”

Suzuki Gives The Jimny The Tiniest Of Updates In Japan

Written by admin

Suzuki has announced some small updates for the Japanese market Jimny and Jimny Sierra models.

The updated off-roaders will be released on October 20, 2021. Models equipped with the four-speed automatic transmission now feature an automatic start-stop feature to cut down on emissions and reduce fuel consumption. This start/stop feature only works when the vehicle is in two-wheel drive mode.

Elsewhere, the updated Jimny and Jimny Sierra now include automatic headlights even if they are not equipped with the available Suzuki Safety Support system, as well as a spare tire cover. No other changes have been made and it is not yet clear if and when these upgrades will be introduced in other markets.

The most affordable Suzuki Jimny on sale is the Jimny XG variant with the 5-speed manual transmission that starts at 1.485 million yen ($13,513). Other variants on offer include the Jimny XL starting at 1.611 million yen ($14,660), the Jimny XC starting at 1.776 million yen ($16,161), the Jimny Sierra JL that’s available from 1.793 million ($16,316), and the flagship Jimny Sierra JC that’s priced at 1.958 million ($17,817) with the five-speed manual and 2.0845 million ($18,969) with the 4-speed automatic.

The launch of these updates comes a few months after the Jimny was launched as an LCV in Europe. It is virtually identical to the standard model but is a two-seater since the rear seats have been deleted for a larger 863-liter cargo area with a safety partition grid and has simple 15-inch steel wheels.

Toyota Launches Second-Gen Aqua / Prius C In Japan With Optional AWD, Standard Emergency Power Supply

Written by admin

Toyota unveiled the all-new second-generation Aqua, aka the Prius C, for the Japanese market. Compared to its predecessor, which debuted in 2012 and has sold more than 1.87 million units, the new Aqua is fitted with an improved hybrid system that is 20 percent more efficient and comes with a new platform and modernized design.

The Aqua is based on the TNGA GA-B platform that debuted last year in the Euro-spec Toyota Yaris. Under the bonnet, there is a naturally aspirated 1.5-liter gasoline engine that works together with an electric motor. The big news here is the brand-new high-output bipolar nickel-hydrogen battery, replacing the nickel-hydrogen battery of its predecessor with approximately twice the output. Thus, the hybrid can operate in EV Mode for longer periods of time in a wider spectrum of scenarios before the ICE engine kicks in.

While being an hybrid, the hybrid Aqua can be driven with one pedal – similarly to BEVs and PHEVs – thanks to the Power+ Mode which utilizes regenerative braking for deceleration. It is also the first Aqua to feature optional E-Four all-wheel-drive for more traction in slippery conditions. According to Toyota, its fuel consumption is an impressive 84.2 mpg (2.79 lt/100 km).

Japan has suffered from many natural disasters (earthquakes, tsunamis, etc.) so Toyota equipped the Aqua with a standard emergency power supply mode allowing electricity to be drawn from the vehicle for external use during blackouts through an AC 100-volt / 1,500-watt power outlet.

Design-wise, the new Aqua is recognizable as an evolution of its predecessor with more muscular and better-integrated rear fenders, a sportier windowline, and smarter LED lights. There are elements from the Euro-spec Yaris, however the Aqua looks more like a compact hatchback and less of a supermini.

Despite the new platform, the redesigned body, and the slightly extended wheelbase (+50 mm), exterior dimensions are unchanged over its predecessor. Toyota claims the new generation has greater interior space, especially for rear passengers, and a larger boot.

Inside, the Aqua is more stylish and incorporates a digital instrument cluster and a 10.5-inch touchscreen for the infotainment. Standard equipment in all grades includes the latest edition of Toyota Safety Sense, featuring a range of ADAS including the Full-speed Range Radar Cruise Control, Lane Tracing Assist, and Teammate Advance Park systems.

The new Aqua is already available in Japan with prices starting from 1,980,000 million yen ($17,996) for the base FWD version, all the way up to 2,598,000 yen ($23,657) for the range-topping E-Four.

“I’m very proud of this charity operation to support children, which also features the final 124 Spider available in the Land of the Rising Sun”, said the Fiat EMEA chief, Luca Napolitano. “For Abarth, Japan is the leading export market, is in constant growth and represents a strong tradition for the brand. This charity auction is a testament to how united our Scorpion is to the country and most of all to its people. It also pays tribute to the first Abarth model produced right here in Japan. Finally, it is also a big occasion to celebrate the month of the star sign Scorpio, like we do every year.”

The car boasts a unique badge, made by the FCA Centro Stile in Turin, Italy, which shows its silhouette on an aluminum plate that also reads ‘Edizione Unica’ (Unique Edition) in red and ‘Per Sempre Tua’ (Forever Yours). The roadster is finished in white and features black and red leather seats, a satellite navigation system, Bose premium audio and LED headlights.

Powering the Mazda MX-5’s Italian cousin is a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder that produces 170 PS (168 HP / 125 kW) at 5,500 rpm and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque at 2,500 rpm. Like the rest of the range, the final example features Brembo brakes, double wishbone suspension at the front and multilink at the rear, and aluminum body panels.
