New Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 Priced From £155k In The UK, Nearly £16k More Than 751HP Taycan Turbo S

Written by admin

Two months ago, Mercedes unveiled the AMG EQS 53 at the Munich Motor Show as the first electric vehicle to wear the AMG badge. Now, the German automaker has released pricing for it, and it’s about what you’d expect for a range-topping high-performance EV sedan.

The EQS 53 will start at £154,995 (equal to around $208,000 at current exchange rates) in the UK, or 55% more than the base EQS 450’s starting price of £99,995. It’s also more expensive than the current flagship Porsche Taycan Turbo S that’s rated for 761PS / 751HP and kicks off from £139,280 (about $186,900).

For that money, you get a dual-motor AWD drivetrain producing 649 hp (658 PS / 484 kW) and 701 lb-ft (950 Nm) of instant electric torque. Upgrade to the AMG Performance Package with the Night Edition that pushes the starting price to £163,900 (around $220,000) though, and that same drivetrain produces 751 hp (761 PS / 560 kW) and 752 lb-ft (1020 Nm) of torque.

The former enables a 3.8-second sprint to 62 mph (100 km/h) with a top speed of 137 mph (220 km/h), while the latter allows for 3.4 seconds to 62 mph with a top speed of 155 mph (249 km/h). The range is the same for both, with a WLTP-estimated 358 miles (576 km) on tap from the car’s 107.8 kWh battery.

Standard features on all variants include the 56-inch Hyperscreen, an AR heads-up display, Nappa leather upholstery, a Burmester® surround sound system, a Parking package with Active Parking Assist, and 360° camera, Driving Assistance Package Plus, AMG sound programs, AMG-specific bodywork, and an AMG steering wheel.

Included with the Night Edition are 21-inch AMG alloy wheels, a flat-bottomed sport steering wheel, and sport pedals. Upgrading to the £8,995 AMG Performance Package (which is only available with the Night Edition) gets you carbon-ceramic brakes, AMG Dynamic Plus boost for Race Start, the AMG Sound Experience, the AMG Driver’s Package with increased top speed, AMG TRACK PACE, and AMG carbon-fiber interior trim.

Finally, serving as a counterpart to the bold Night Edition is the more subtle Touring specification, which comes with 22-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels and elegant ambient lighting in the cabin. On top of that, you can opt for the £2,995 Rear Luxury Lounge package (only available with the Touring), which outfits the multi-contour rear seats with black Exclusive Nappa leather upholstery, power reclining, luxury headrests, neck and shoulder heating, comfort armrests, separate climate controls, an MBUX tablet, wireless charging, and additional USB ports.

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ is currently on sale now, with the first UK deliveries expected to arrive in April 2022.

Facelifted 2023 Mercedes-AMG A35 Spied Hiding Mild Visual Changes

Written by admin

We have already seen a few camouflaged prototypes of the upcoming facelifted A-Class, but this time our spy photographers provided us with a set of pictures showing the updated Mercedes-AMG A35 4MATIC.

The light camouflage on the front end is hiding sharper LED graphics for the headlights, a new grille, and a slightly redesigned front bumper with AMG-style intakes. At the back, changes seem to be limited to the taillights since the uncovered rear bumper is keeping the diffuser, the vertical inlets, and the dual tailpipes of the current model.

The facelifted A-Class range is also expected to get interior updates with the dual-screen integrating a newer version of the MBUX infotainment. Since this is a mid-life facelift and not a new generation, it is unlikely that the hatchback will get Mercedes’ new screen layout which at the moment is reserved for higher segments.

Mechanical changes will probably be limited since the model is only three years old. The A35 might not be the top-of-the-range hot hatch coming from Affalterbach, as that title belongs to the A45 S, but it is still pretty fast. The current version is fitted with a turbocharged 2,0-liter engine producing 301 hp (225 kW / 306 PS) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, allowing a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) acceleration in 4.7 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h).

Lexus LFA And Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722 S Are So Different, Yet So Very Special

Written by admin

The Lexus LFA and Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren were two of the finest supercars launched in the 2000s and 2010s respectively, but which is quicker?

To find out, Lovecars recently lined up the duo for a drag race. Only it was no regular SLR McLaren that was featured, but a 722 S Roadster.

First, the figures. Driving the LFA is a screaming 4.8-liter naturally aspirated V10 producing 553 hp at 8,700 rpm and 354 lb-ft (480 Nm) of torque at 6,800 rpm. Coupled to this engine is a six-speed semi-automatic transmission powering the rear wheels. By today’s standards, the LFA may seem underpowered but it remains one of the best-sounding production cars ever created.

By comparison, the 722 S Roadster features a modified version of the SLR McLaren’s 5.4-liter supercharged V8, tweaked to deliver 641 hp at 6,500 rpm and 605 lb-ft (820 Nm) of torque at 4,000 rpm.

The added grunt of the Merc helps it sprint out to an early lead over the LFA and Tiff Needell, who is behind the wheel of the Lexus, is unable to catch up and close the distance. The same result was mimicked in the second race.

While supercars like the Lexus LFA and Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722 S Roadster place an emphasis on performance, they are about more than just insane straight-line acceleration. The LFA, for example, is a precision tool perfectly suited to racetracks and flowing mountain roads while the SLR is a seasoned grand tourer that can crush continents. So, which would you rather own?

BMW Wins U.S. Luxury Sales Crown By Less Than 4,000 Units

Written by admin

2020 was a year most automakers would like to forget and that’s especially true in the luxury segment as every single brand posted a decline in U.S. sales.

However, the luxury sales crown is a closely watched contest and only a few thousand units separated BMW, Mercedes and Lexus last year.

BMW took top honors as they sold 278,732 vehicles in the United States. That’s a drop of 17.5%, but it’s worth noting the automaker was fined $18 (£13.3 / €14.7) million by the Securities and Exchange Commission for inflating their sales between 2015 and 2019.

Second place went to Lexus which sold 275,041 vehicles last year. That’s a decline of 7.7% and the drop can be partly attributed to weak sales of the ES and RX.

Rounding out the podium is Mercedes. They sold 274,916 passengers vehicles – excluding vans – for a drop of 13.0%. C-Class sales plummeted 46.5% for the year, while sales of the E-Class / CLS and S-Class were both off by more than 30%.

Over at Audi, sales dropped 17% to 186,620 units. Their big losers were the A4, A6 and A7 which all saw declines of between 31-42%. On the bright side, Q3 sales skyrocketed 84% for the year.

Acura came in fifth place with sales of 136,983 units. That’s a decline of 13.5% and that can be chalked up to weaker demand for the outgoing TLX and MDX.  However, both models are new for 2021.

The final two spots go to Cadillac and Lincoln. Cadillac sales were down 17.1% to 129,495 units, while Lincoln sales were off 6.1% at 105,410 units.

Lincoln sales will likely drop again this year as the brand has axed the MKZ and Continental. While they were Lincoln’s slowest selling vehicles, aside from the MKT, they still contributed 17,780 units to the bottom line last year.

Lastly, Infiniti sales were down 32.5% to 79,502 units. The drop was largely due to a decline in Q50 and QX60 sales which were off 36.4% and 47.0%, respectively.

Mega Hatch Combat: BMW M2 CS Vs. Audi RS3 Vs. Mercedes-AMG A45 S

Written by admin

While new electric vehicles are coming thick and fast, there are still heaps of driver-focused ICE performance cars on the market and they come in all shapes and sizes. In the compact category, for instance, you can get your kicks by choosing the BMW M2 CS, the Audi RS3, or the Mercedes-AMG A 45 S.

Sure, these cars are out of the price range of many people, but they all deliver excellent performance. CarWow recently pitted them against each other to see which is the quickest.

As standard, it is the M2 CS that has the advantage over the other two. Its twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six is good for 444 hp and 406 lb-ft (550 Nm) of torque and is coupled to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission sending power to the rear wheels.

Watch Also: BMW M2 CS And Jaguar F-Type Are Two Unlikely Rivals

The Mercedes-AMG A45 S has the smallest engine of the bunch, in the form of a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 415 hp and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque. It is also all-wheel drive and has an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

As for the Audi RS3 tested, it is actually a 2016 model and has been equipped with some modifications so it now produces 450 hp and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) of torque.

Off the line, it comes as no surprise that the all-wheel drive Audi and Mercedes-AMG have the advantage. However, as the speeds start to increase, the BMW claws its way back and speeds past the Mercedes-AMG and is only narrowly defeated by the tuned Audi, while in a rolling drag race, the M2 CS easily defeated both the RS3 and the A 45 S.

Mercedes SLR McLaren Vs. McLaren 540C In Battle Of The Generations

Written by admin

There’s about a decade separating the Mercedes SLR McLaren and the McLaren 540C, but pitting them against each other still makes for an exciting race.

Looking at the spec sheets, it seems that, in terms of power, the balance definitely tilts in favor of the SLR. Its supercharged 5.4-liter V8 engine produces 626 PS (617 HP / 460 kW) and 780 Nm (575 lb-ft) of torque and is coupled to a five-speed automatic transmission. That’s good enough to rocket it to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.8 seconds and up to a 335 km/h (208 mph) top speed.

Watch Also: Can A Mercedes SLR Keep Up With An Aston DBS Superleggera And Ferrari GTC4Lusso?

The 540C, on the other hand, has a smaller twin-turbo V8. The 3.8-liter unit produces 540 PS (532 HP / 397 kW), hence the name, and 540 Nm (398 lb-ft) of torque. It is paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, a configuration that helps it sprint to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.5 seconds and max out at 320 km/h (199 mph).

Tipping the scales at almost 1,500 kg (3,295 lbs), the 540C is around 300 kg (660 lbs) lighter than the SLR and boasts a slightly better power-to-weight ratio.

In this series of tests, the two were subjected to a couple of quarter-mile drag races from a standing start, and to another from a 60 mph (96 km/h) rolling start, before concluding with a 0-100-0 race. So, does the entry-level McLaren have what it takes to beat the SRL?

2022 Mercedes-AMG SL 63 Makes Spy Debut With Two Wheel Designs

Written by admin

This marks the first time we’ve ever seen the all-new 2022 Mercedes SL in flagship AMG guise undergoing tests, and as expected, it was the hexagonal quad-pipes that gave it away.

Otherwise, this prototype looks pretty much the same as other previously-seen camouflaged all-new SL models. The only things that are different, aside from the pipes, is the camouflage pattern on the roof and the wheels.

In fact, this prototype is testing with two different wheel designs. The ones at the rear feature a 5-single spoke aesthetic, while the front wheels boast a 5-dual spoke look.

This next iteration of the SL will feature the same platform as the Mercedes-AMG GT, something AMG boss Tobias Moers already confirmed.

“We’re bringing back the historic DNA of the SL,” he said last year. “It’s far sportier [this time around]. It will have a perfect compromise between driving dynamics and comfort, because it’s still kind of a cruiser too.”

Aside from the common architecture, the SL and GT are also expected to share axle assemblies, suspensions, steering systems, the 48V electric architecture and hybrid powertrains. Both will be built alongside each other at the German carmaker’s plant in Sindelfingen, Germany.

Meanwhile, a source told Autocar that the new SL was designed to feature a longer hood and a more rearward-positioned cabin.

“The new platform has given us more freedom,” said the source. “There’s more distance between the front axle and the front firewall. This gives it more traditional proportions.”

The range could kick off with an SL 450 EQ Boost variant, followed by an SL 53, SL 500 and SL 63 / 63 S (two stages of tune). The latter is rumored to have a 604 HP twin-turbo V8, although no specs have been made official as of yet.

Mercedes-AMG Cars Now More Road Trip Friendly Thanks To New Roof Box

Written by admin

Traveling long distances with your Mercedes-AMG car has just become easier thanks to the introduction of the roof box, tested by AMG engineers to ensure optimum values in terms of aerodynamics, handling and noise emission.

Buyers can purchase the roof box, which has a capacity of 410 liters (14.5 cu.ft), starting this year in November at Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-AMG partners.

The lid of the box boasts a dynamic design and is painted comet-grey magno with lateral decoration lines, while a shiny black element, including a fin, is embedded on the top. Additionally, the handles (integrated into the lid design) help reduce air resistance.

The Mercedes-AMG roof box actually comes in two versions, the second being developed specifically for Mercedes coupe vehicles. It features a different diffuser shape, adapted to the sporty design of a coupe model.

The German carmaker stresses that the roof box is suitable for everyday use, thanks in part to its durable and hard-wearing plastic which can easily withstand any weather condition. The box can actually be mounted on all Mercedes cars with base-railing carriers, using the quick-release clamping system – although since it’s AMG-branded, fitting it onto some entry level diesel-powered C-Class Wagon might be a bit over the top. An E 63 on the other hand will definitely “do”.

You can also open it from both sides, making loading “easy and balanced,” and fill it with up to 70 kg’s (154 lbs) worth of gear. The box itself weighs 26 kg (57 lbs).

The Mercedes-AMG roof box is approved to the legal speed limit of 130 km/h (80 mph).

Take An Up-Close Look At The 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class

Written by admin

A new prototype for the 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class has been spied testing with very little camouflage, providing us with a good idea of the vehicle’s overall design.

This prototype is finished in gloss black and includes some light camouflage across the front and rear fascias. One of the first things that will strike you about the design of the new S-Class is the sportier front and rear fascias which are more angular than the outgoing model and more akin to the current Mercedes-Benz CLS.

Also of note with this prototype are the pop-out door handles that sit flush with the bodywork when not in use. Our spy photographers have previously spotted next-gen S-Class testers with traditional door handles, leading us to believe certain variants will have traditional door handles while higher-end models will get the pop-out units.

Inside, significant changes have been made to the car. For starters, there is a large digital instrument cluster and a 12.8-inch infotainment system neatly incorporated vertically into the dashboard. This screen incorporates the company’s latest MBUX software and can be had with OLED technology and haptic feedback. In addition, the instrument cluster provides a 3D effect without the user having to use 3D glasses.

As part of the brand’s shift to more screens and touch surfaces, it has taken away 27 hard buttons and switches from the outgoing model. Significant advancements have also been made to the screens enjoyed by rear-seat passengers.

Underpinning the new S-Class is the MRA II rear-wheel drive platform that uses carbon fiber and aluminum extensively in its construction. This architecture will also bring with it rear-wheel steering. Other key pieces of technology found within the new S-Class will include Level 3 autonomous driving capabilities, active suspension, and more.

Powertrain details remain unclear although electrification will be present across the range, including various 48-volt mild-hybrid models and a plug-in hybrid.
