2022 Toyota Avalon Drops AWD And TRD, Starts From $36,375 For Its Final Year

Written by admin

The fifth-generation Avalon might have been introduced in 2018, but Toyota has confirmed that 2022 will mark the end of its production. Today, the automaker announced pricing for the 2022 MY alongside a few changes in the lineup.

The 2022 Toyota Avalon starts from $36,375 (excluding the $1,025 fee), making it $250 more expensive than last year’s model.

The full-size sedan is not available in AWD variants anymore, while the sporty TRD trim was also dropped from the range. The good news for prospective buyers is the addition of new safety features as standard, including the upgraded Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ package (dynamic radar cruise control, lane tracing assist, blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, etc), and the addition of a rear-seat reminder system.

Mazda3 And CX-30 Get Mild Updates In Japan Including New Special Editions

Written by admin

After the Mazda CX-3 Super Edgy, the automaker announced a series of special trim levels of the Mazda3 and the CX-30 in Japan, alongside small updates on the e-SkyActiv X motor.

Those include tweaking the intake port and exhaust silencer of the gasoline engine to produce a richer sound for spicing up the driving experience during acceleration. Additionally, engineers have updated the gas pedal feel for a greater “sense of unity with the car”. As a refresher, the e-SkyActiv X is a mild-hybrid 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 183 hp (137 kW / 186 PS) and 240 Nm (177 lb-ft) of torque.

New Mazda MX-5 990S Edition Is A Pure, No-Frills Sports Car That Weighs Just 990 KG But It’s Only For Japan

Written by admin

Long heralded as the ultimate drivers car, one of the Mazda MX-5 Miata’s greatest advantages has always been its low weight. Japanese customers are set to get even lower weight thanks to the newly unveiled 990S trim.

The new edition is named after the weight of the vehicle, which Car Watch reports has been reduced to an NA Miata-rivaling 990 kg (2,182 lbs). The model rivals the original Miata in simplicity, too, having had nearly every frill removed.

Mazda achieved the weight reductions in a number of ways, including ridding the car of sound deadening and by ligthening the hood. It also gets lightweight wheels that remove 3.2 kg (7 lbs) and Brembo brakes that help remove 700 g (1.5 lbs) despite being bigger at the front.

Although that less than 10 lbs of weight savings between the wheels and brakes may not sound like an astounding amount, Mazda‘s engineers say that 1 kg (2.2 lbs) of unsprung mass is the equivalent of 10 kg (22 lbs) of sprung mass when it comes to cars.

To alert passersby to the lightweighting efforts of its engineers, Mazda has opted to swap the red brake calipers for black ones with blue “Brembo” script. The blue theme follows on the A/C vents and the soft top fabric.

It’s not all stripping, though, Mazda has added a new feature that might scare some purists, but excite engineers. Vehicle Attitude Stabilization Control is a new handling technology designed to control lean in corners.

[embedded content]

The car does this by applying a minimal amount of brake pressure to the rear inner wheel when the it senses more than 0.3 G of cornering forces. It works to suppress wheel lift up and keep the vehicle flatter through the corners. Whether or not drivers will like it remains to be seen, but Mazda worked to ensure that drivers felt no discomfort while using the system that replicates the experiences of using an electronically controlled suspension. It can be turned off by turning off DSC.

Based on the least powerful version of the car, the 990S gets the 130 hp (132 PS/97 kW) 1.5-liter engine with the open differential. Since the bigger 2.0-liter engine requires heavier duty parts to deal with the extra power, it won’t be offered with the lightweight package. But according to Shigeki Saito, the development chief for the 990S, that’s not a problem.

“Horsepower and fun are not proportional, but lightness and fun are proportional,” he told Car Watch (as translated by Google). “The lighter the car, the more fun it is. If you enjoy driving, I think this roadster is the best right now.”

Opel Rocks-e Is A Rebadged Version Of The Tiny Citroën Ami EV

Written by admin

Say hello to the Opel Rocks-e, a rebadged version of the Citroën Ami that in the European Union is classified as a quadricycle rather than a car.

The tiny four-wheeler is powered by a 5.5-kWh battery pack and has a single electric motor pumping out a mere 8 hp. Obviously, it isn’t fast but as it cannot weigh more than 425 kg (937 lbs) excluding its batteries under EU rules, the tiny electric motor is enough to propel it to 28 mph (45 km/h), enough for some inner-city driving. It also has a respectable WLTP range of 47 miles (75 km).

Read Also: Citroen’s My Ami Cargo Could Be The Cutest Electric Delivery Vehicle

The Opel Rocks-e is just 2.41 meters (7.9 feet) long and retains pretty much all of the same body parts as the Ami, meaning it looks exactly the same, except for the badges. As such, it features large headlights and secondary lights just below the windshield. It also sits on compact 14-inch wheels and has been presented here in a two-tone shade of silver and black.

One of the most intriguing aspects of the Rocks-e, as well as the Citroën Ami, is the fact that the doors open in opposite directions. It also has interchangeable body panels.

The interior is largely identical to the Ami and includes a tiny digital instrument cluster, a flat-bottomed steering wheel, climate control, a USB port, a cupholder, some storage cubbies, and two simple seats. It’s not what you’d call luxurious and could be better described as ‘fit-for-purpose’.

European sales of the Opel Rocks-e will initially kick off in Germany this fall, where it will be offered in base, Klub, and TeKno trim levels, before it arrives in other markets next year.

Toyota Launches Second-Gen Aqua / Prius C In Japan With Optional AWD, Standard Emergency Power Supply

Written by admin

Toyota unveiled the all-new second-generation Aqua, aka the Prius C, for the Japanese market. Compared to its predecessor, which debuted in 2012 and has sold more than 1.87 million units, the new Aqua is fitted with an improved hybrid system that is 20 percent more efficient and comes with a new platform and modernized design.

The Aqua is based on the TNGA GA-B platform that debuted last year in the Euro-spec Toyota Yaris. Under the bonnet, there is a naturally aspirated 1.5-liter gasoline engine that works together with an electric motor. The big news here is the brand-new high-output bipolar nickel-hydrogen battery, replacing the nickel-hydrogen battery of its predecessor with approximately twice the output. Thus, the hybrid can operate in EV Mode for longer periods of time in a wider spectrum of scenarios before the ICE engine kicks in.

Also: This is Toyota GR’s Japanese Lineup; Which One Would You Like To See In Your Market?

While being an hybrid, the hybrid Aqua can be driven with one pedal – similarly to BEVs and PHEVs – thanks to the Power+ Mode which utilizes regenerative braking for deceleration. It is also the first Aqua to feature optional E-Four all-wheel-drive for more traction in slippery conditions. According to Toyota, its fuel consumption is an impressive 84.2 mpg (2.79 lt/100 km).

Japan has suffered from many natural disasters (earthquakes, tsunamis, etc.) so Toyota equipped the Aqua with a standard emergency power supply mode allowing electricity to be drawn from the vehicle for external use during blackouts through an AC 100-volt / 1,500-watt power outlet.

Design-wise, the new Aqua is recognizable as an evolution of its predecessor with more muscular and better-integrated rear fenders, a sportier windowline, and smarter LED lights. There are elements from the Euro-spec Yaris, however the Aqua looks more like a compact hatchback and less of a supermini.

Despite the new platform, the redesigned body, and the slightly extended wheelbase (+50 mm), exterior dimensions are unchanged over its predecessor. Toyota claims the new generation has greater interior space, especially for rear passengers, and a larger boot.

Inside, the Aqua is more stylish and incorporates a digital instrument cluster and a 10.5-inch touchscreen for the infotainment. Standard equipment in all grades includes the latest edition of Toyota Safety Sense, featuring a range of ADAS including the Full-speed Range Radar Cruise Control, Lane Tracing Assist, and Teammate Advance Park systems.

The new Aqua is already available in Japan with prices starting from 1,980,000 million yen ($17,996) for the base FWD version, all the way up to 2,598,000 yen ($23,657) for the range-topping E-Four.

2022 Lexus NX Revealed Looking A Whole Lot Better Inside And Out, Gets PHEV Too

Written by admin

Lexus is embarking on a major product push, which will see the brand launch 20 new or updated vehicles by 2025. That offensive is kicking into high gear tonight with the unveiling of the 2022 NX.

Redesigned from the ground up, the 2022 Lexus NX looks like a crossover-ified version of the IS sport sedan. It features an all-new front fascia with a revised spindle grille that has “tall U-shaped blocks” for a more three-dimensional appearance.

The grille is flanked by vertical air intakes and redesigned headlights with integrated daytime running lights. This is a notable change as it means the NX no longer resembles a rolling Nike advertisement.

Continuing down the sides, we can see evolutionary bodywork and a distinctive shoulder line. The rear end is also familiar, but it adopts full-width taillights and “Lexus” lettering that replaces the circular “L” emblem.

An Improved Interior With An All-New Touchscreen Infotainment System

Moving inside, the cabin has been completely reimagined with higher quality materials and a modern design.

The stars of the show are a 7-inch digital instrument cluster and a next-generation infotainment system known as the Lexus Interface. We’ll discuss the latter in a separate article, but the touchscreen infotainment system has 9.8- and 14-inch displays as well as a handful of physical knobs and buttons.

[embedded content]

Putting the infotainment system aside, the 2022 NX benefits from improved front seats which come standard with heating. Owners will also find more head and legroom as well as additional cargo space.

Full details will be announced closer to launch, but the NX can be equipped with a handful of new options including a panoramic moonroof and a digital rearview mirror. Customers can also get a 10-inch head-up display, a wireless smartphone charger and heated rear seats. The model also offers “thematic ambient illumination” with a choice of 14 themes – such as Rain Forest, Waterfall and Sunset – as well as 64 colors.

New Safety Tech Including “Digital” Door Handles

On the safety front, the 2022 NX comes with “Digital Latch” push-button door handles with Safe Exit Assist technology. During a demonstration last week, Lexus showed us how the system automatically prevents people from opening doors if a cyclist or vehicle is approaching from behind within close proximity. It’s an interesting feature and can be manually overridden if needed.

Besides the trick door handles, the NX benefits from the latest Lexus Safety System+ 3.0. It includes Intelligent High Beams, Road Sign Assist, Lane Assistance, and an updated Pre-Collision System with Oncoming Vehicle Detection which can activate automatic emergency braking to help avoid a frontal collision. Other highlights include Risk Avoidance Emergency Steer Assist, Left Turn Oncoming Vehicle Detection/Braking, Right/Left Turn Oncoming Pedestrian Detection/Braking and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control with Curve Speed Management.

The 2022 NX Features Lexus’ First Plug-In Hybrid Powertrain

Under the hood, there’s an assortment of different engines including a new 2.5-liter four-cylinder that produces an estimated 203 hp (151 kW / 206 PS) and 184 lb-ft (249 Nm) of torque.  It’s connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission, which enables the front-wheel drive NX 250 to run from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 8.2 seconds. Opting for all-wheel drive increases traction, but also results in a slower 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) time of 8.6 seconds.

If that’s not fast enough, there’s a new turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder with an estimated 275 hp (205 kW / 279 PS) and 317 lb-ft (430 Nm) of torque. It’s paired to an eight-speed automatic and allows the NX 350 to accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 6.8 seconds.

[embedded content]

Customers looking for something more eco-friendly can opt for the 2022 NX 350h. It has a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and an all-wheel drive system with a rear electric motor.

This setup gives the crossover a combined output of 239 hp (178 kW / 242 PS), which is a 20% increase over the current hybrid. Thanks to the extra power, the dash to 60 mph (96 km/h) is cut to 5.7 seconds which is an improvement of 1.5 seconds. If that wasn’t impressive enough, the NX 350h has an estimated fuel economy rating of 36 mpg combined, which is 6 mpg better than the outgoing model.

The big news for 2022 is the addition of a plug-in hybrid powertrain. It’s a first for Lexus and the NX 450h+ has a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, a lithium-ion battery pack and a rear-mounted electric motor.

If that setup sounds familiar, it should be as the powertrain largely carries over from the Toyota RAV4 Prime.  There are a handful of subtle differences, but the Lexus will have an electric-only range of approximately 36 miles (58 km) and an “EV output equivalent to a 2.0-liter engine.” The crossover will also be capable of hitting 60 mph (96 km/h) in approximately six seconds.

When the battery is depleted, it can be fully recharged in approximately 4.5 hours with the standard 3.3 kW onboard charger. However, customers can get an optional 6.6 kW charger which reduces the time to 2.5 hours.

The NX450h+ comes with a newly developed full-time AWD system, which promises to provide a confident and sporty driving experience. The company didn’t say much about it, but noted front and rear torque distribution will be optimized according to driving conditions.

The plug-in hybrid also has a Predictive Efficient Drive system, which “learns driving habits, predicts the expected roadway ahead and analyzes real-time traffic reports to optimize charging and discharging of the hybrid battery.” The system learns as you drive, and can predict when and where the vehicle is likely to stop or slow down. As Lexus explained, “when the NX approaches a location where the driver has slowed or stopped in the past, and the driver releases the accelerator pedal, Predictive Efficient Drive increases regenerative braking, allowing more efficient energy to be recovered and recharged into the hybrid battery.”

A New Platform And An F Sport Variant

The 2022 Lexus NX rides on the TNGA-K platform and features a lower center of gravity as well as improved torsional rigidity thanks to laser peening welding. Engineers also beefed up the rear hatch area and focused on improving driving dynamics.  It’s also worth noting the redesigned model is lighter than its predecessor as some variants drop around 200 lbs (91 kg).

Speaking of performance, the F Sport package returns and includes an active variable suspension with performance dampers. The package also adds a revised grille, sportier bumpers and 20-inch gloss black aluminum wheels.

The sporty styling continues in the cabin as drivers will find two-tone sport seats, aluminum pedals and perforated NuLuxe upholstery. The F Sport is also distinguished by a sport steering wheel, special scuff plates and Dark Graphite Aluminum accents.

The 2022 Lexus NX will go into production in the third quarter and pricing will be announced closer to launch.

The New Bentley Continental GT Speed Will Happily Drift On Demand

Written by admin

Bentley has invited UK media for a first go in their new Continental GT Speed at Silverstone, releasing at the same time all the technical details of the “most dynamic road-going Bentley ever made” and a new image gallery.

In addition to packing more firepower, the new Continental GT Speed is the first to feature a rear-steering system, as well as the first Bentley with a rear electronically-controlled limited-slip differential.

Read More: The New 650 HP Bentley Continental GT Speed Is A Country Gent’s GT-R

The result, according to Bentley, is not only a more agile super GT but one that can actually drift itself out of a corner. The newly calibrated Sport drive mode limits the available to the front axle to 28 percent and almost shuts off the counter-oversteer torque applied in the Comfort and Bentley drive modes.

In addition, the new Continental GT Speed can be optioned with the largest car brakes in the world, featuring 440 mm carbon discs at the front with giant 10-piston calipers. Bentley says that their latest-generation carbon brakes save 77 lbs (35 kg) of unsprung mass and are exceptionally fade resistant.

Under the bonnet, you’ll find Bentley’s familiar twin-turbo 6.0-liter W12 engine, which has been upgraded to 650 HP (659 PS), up from the regular model’s 626 HP (635 PS). Torque remains the same, rated at a colossal 664 lb-ft (900 Nm). Moreover, the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission can change gears in half the time of the standard Conti GT when in Sport mode.

As a result, the new Continental GT Speed can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds (0-100 km/h in 3.6 seconds) and reach a top speed of 208 mph (335 km/h).

Alpha’s New Wolf Electric Pickup Looks Like It Came Back From The Future

Written by admin

The fourth in the company’s growing range of vehicles, the Alpha Wolf is a small electric pickup truck that can handle more than just tiny jobs.

The design, while following the aesthetic details of the brand’s other electric models, also adds a touch of 1980s with its boxy shape and accessories, bringing to mind Marty McFly’s 1985 Toyota SR5 truck.

The little pickup is based on the same platform as the JAX, which you might remember being unveiled in February. Alpha says the Wolf can be equipped with a 75-85 kWh battery pack earning it an estimated 275 miles of range. Motors can either power the front or all wheels.

More to the point, though, despite being 23-inches (584 mm) shorter than a Ford Ranger at 188 inches (4,775mm) long, 76 inches (1,930 mm) wide and 66 inches (1676 mm) tall, Alpha is aiming for a pretty reasonable towing capacity of 3,000 lbs. It can also hit 60 mph from a standing start in just 6.2 seconds.

With just two seats, the pickup’s bed takes up most of its length and is 65-inches (1,651 mm) long by 59-inches (1,498 mm) wide and 16-inches (406 mm) deep. That won’t hold a 4×8 plywood sheet, but it will net you 34.5 cubic feet of storage in the bed’s truck. If you want some more secure storage, there’s a frunk, too.

[embedded content]

Images show a large solar panel covering the bed of the truck. Although official details on this feature are frustratingly scant, we can presume that it will help charge the battery a bit while you’re trekking out away from the grid.

Inside, the Wolf looks a lot like Alpha’s other creations. The interior is uncluttered but modern and features a tablet-style infotainment screen and a digital instrument cluster behind the steering wheel. Alpha promises lots of charging ports for your electronics as well as lots of storage for your belongings.

One of the most affordable electric trucks

Prices will start at just $36,000 running up to $46,000 before you even consider federal EV tax credits. That’s less than the JAX CUV, which is priced between $38,000-$48,000, but more than the standard Ace coupe, which starts at just $32,000. In any case, it’s one of the least expensive electric trucks in the North American market.

As with its other models, Alpha is accepting reservations on the Wolf, though exactly when deliveries are expected to start is a little less clear.
