Nissan Bringing Host Of New Models To 2021 Chicago Auto Show, Including Z Proto

Nissan will bring a plethora of models to this week’s Chicago Auto Show being held from July 15 through to July 19 at McCormick Place’s West Building.

Featured at the Nissan booth will be the 2021 Armada, 2021 Rogue, 2021 Kicks, 2022 Pathfinder, 2022 Frontier, 2022 Ariya, and the striking Z Proto which will soon spawn a production model.

“After nearly two years of introducing products virtually, we are celebrating the chance to show these new vehicles on stage in Chicagoland,” regional vice president of Nissan’s Midwest Region, Craig Keeys said in a statement. “Sure these vehicles look great on your computer screen, but there is nothing like opening the door, inhaling that new-car smell, and seeing and feeling all of the quality and thoughtful design that Nissan is bringing to market these days. The just-introduced 2022 Pathfinder and 2022 Frontier are must-sees for any family considering a new SUV or truck.”

The all-new Pathfinder was unveiled in February and started to arrive at dealerships across the United States in June. It is priced from $34,560 including destination and is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine producing 284 hp and 259 lb-ft (351 Nm) of torque. This engine is coupled to a nine-speed automatic transmission that can be optioned with a four-wheel drive system.

The Nissan Z Proto will certainly be a crowd favorite and the Chicago Auto Show could prove to be the final auto show that it is shown at as the production-ready car will be officially unveiled on August 17 at a special event in New York City.

Production Nissan Z Coupe Revealed By Patent Office And It’s Nearly Identical To Z Proto Concept

Nissan unveiled the Z Proto last fall and now the trademark office in Australia has revealed the production model in a series of patent photos.

Looking virtually identical to the concept, the road-going model has a slightly revised grille with a sensor unit tucked between two horizontal accents.

Additional changes are limited, but the production model has a rear lock and reflectors behind the rear wheels. The liftgate also looks different, but this appears to be an optical illusion as the Z Proto had a black roof which visually expanded the glass area.

The changes are pretty minor and mean the production model will remain almost identical to the Z Proto. That’s a good thing as the concept was well-received.

Given the similarities between the exteriors, it’s likely the interior will mirror the concept as well. This means we can expect a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a modern infotainment system and gauge pods on the dashboard.

Nissan has been tight-lipped about performance specifications, but the Z Proto featured a twin-turbo V6 that was connected to six-speed manual transmission. It’s expected to carryover from the Infiniti Q60 Red Sport 400, where the engine develops 400 hp (298 kW / 406 PS) and 350 lb-ft (474 Nm) of torque.

That remains unconfirmed, but Nissan has already hinted the next Z will have more power than its predecessor. As a reminder, the current 370Z has a 3.7-liter V6 that produces 332 hp (248 kW / 337 PS) and 270 lb-ft (366 Nm) of torque. The 370Z Nismo kicks that up to 350 hp (261 kW / 355 PS) and 276 lb-ft (374 Nm).

2021 Nissan Kicks And Armada Go Official At 11:00 AM ET, Watch The Live Presentation Here

Having been teased a couple of times, America’s 2021 Nissan Kicks and Armada are about to make their official debut, with the presentation starting today at 11:00 a.m. ET (5:00 p.m. CET).

Expected to mirror the looks of the international facelifted variant, the facelifted Nissan Kicks should feature a larger grille upfront, slender headlamps, and a slightly revised cockpit.

An electrified powertrain is expected under the bonnet, pairing a 1.2-liter three-cylinder gasoline range extender and an electric motor that’s juiced up by a 1.57 kWh lithium-ion battery in international markets for a combined 127 HP and 192 lb-ft (260 Nm) of torque. While this powertrain probably won’t make its way across the pond, we might be looking at the same 1.6-liter unit over here, which is rated at 122 HP and 114 lb-ft (155 Nm) in the outgoing iteration.

Joining the 2021 Kicks will be the facelifted Armada. Believed to be similar in terms of styling to the facelifted Patrol, it is understood to premiere with an updated grille and C-shaped headlamps, as well as new LED taillights and bumpers.

The cabin of the body-on-frame SUV might feature higher quality materials and more technology gizmos, such as the dual-screen set-up in the center console like the latest Patrol.

We don’t know anything about the engine family yet, but we are about to find out what will power the 2021 Armada. As a reminder, the outgoing model is offered with a 390 HP and 394 lb-ft (533 Nm) 5.6-liter V8, which works in concert with a seven-speed automatic transmission and optional four-wheel drive.

This Poorly Executed Nissan GT-R Replica Won’t Fool Anyone

The R35-generation Nissan GT-R dates back to late 2017 and while it still offers superb performance, its design has started to feel dated. Clearly, that hasn’t dissuaded the owner of this… ahem, ‘GT-R’.

We’re not sure where exactly this was spotted but it seems to be somewhere in Asia. While its owner would have you believe that it’s an oddly-modified GT-R, anyone familiar with the Godzilla will instantly notice that this thing is a rather poorly executed replica.

The modifications made to the car are so extensive it’s difficult to determine what model this replica is based on. Whatever it is, it is obviously much smaller than a GT-R, as evidenced by the very short wheelbase and the weird proportions.

Up front, we can see the owner of the car has equipped it with a front bumper and grille that kinda look similar to that of the actual item. Elsewhere, the car is rocking a front-mounted intercooler, although based on all the other modifications made, we wouldn’t be surprised if it’s just for show and not actually functional.

Other GT-R-inspired modifications include the headlights, hood and doors. The owner has even gone to the trouble of trying to replicate the sharp roofline of the Japanese sports car. There’s also a wing just like the GT-R’s at the rear, as the Reddit photo shows.

Mitsubishi Outlander And Eclipse Cross Are The Slowest-Selling New Vehicles In The U.S.

The two slowest-selling new vehicles in the United States are both Mitsubishis, a new study has found.

During a recent analysis of 4.4 million new and used vehicles sold throughout the United States in the period from March through June 2020, it was discovered that the Mitsubishi Outlander and Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross are the slowest-selling new vehicles in the country. On average, it takes 197.7 days for an Outlander and 187.7 days for an Eclipse Cross to sell.

It is hardly a surprise that the Mitsubishi Outlander is so difficult to shift as it has been in production in third-generation guise, with minimal changes, since 2014 and there are many newer and more modern alternatives on the market.

Speaking about it, iSeeCars chief executive Phong Ly said: “The Mitsubishi Outlander compact SUV saw a 76 percent decrease in sales in the second quarter of 2020 compared to 2019, which shows that there isn’t high demand for the vehicle, despite its affordability and unique features like a third-row seat.”

It is somewhat of a surprise to see the Eclipse Cross so high up on the list, though, as it is still relatively new. However, like other Mitsubishi models, it is extremely basic and clearly failing to cash-in on demand for SUVs and crossovers in the United States.

The third slowest-selling new vehicle is the Buick Encore with an average sale time of 170 days. It was followed by the Nissan Frontier (158.3 days), Chevrolet Impala (153.1 days), Nissan Altima (151.9 days), Nissan Armada (151.2 days), Cadillac Escalade ESV (151.1 days), Range Rover Velar (150.4 days), and the Infiniti QX60 (149.9 days.)

It sure is not good for car manufacturers to have their new vehicles sitting around for so long. On the flip side, shoppers may find some good savings with such vehicles as dealerships should be eager to get them off their lots.
