Ford F-150 Tuned By Roush Lines Up Against A Ram 1500 TRX

Written by admin

The Ram 1500 TRX has established itself as the king of combustion-powered pickup trucks but can a Ford F-150 modified by Roush give it a run for its money?

To try and answer that question, the duo were pitted against each other for a series of drag races. After reading their specs, it doesn’t take a genius to guess which truck comes out on top.

Powering the TRX is a 6.2-liter supercharged Hellcat V8 with 702 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque. This engine drives all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission and in ideal conditions, the truck can hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in less than 4 seconds. By comparison, the Ford F-150 tuned by Roush has a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 with 650 hp and 610 lb-ft that’s mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Off the line, the Ram has a significant advantage and walks away from the Ford without breaking a sweat. This result is replicated in each of the other races, both from a standing start and from a roll.

Admittedly, this isn’t really a fair fight as the F-150 tested is a previous-generation model. The fairest comparison would involve the TRX being pitted against a tuned version of the new F-150 Raptor. With enough power, Hennessey Performance has already proven that a modified new F-150 can out-accelerate the TRX.

No, You’re Aren’t Seeing Double; This Is An Extra Wide 1994 Ram 3500

Written by admin

This is a 1997 Dodge Ram 3500 but do you notice something a little different with it? Well, this 3500 has been widened by a foot, making an already big and imposing pickup truck even more massive.

The bizarre truck is currently up for sale on Craigslist in Spokane Valley, Washington and according to the seller, more than 1,400 hours of work were put into it. The listing doesn’t detail how the 3500 was widened but we can’t imagine it was particularly easy.

The extra width is immediately obvious from the front end where the grilles of the truck are much wider than standard. A two-piece windshield has also been fitted and located directly behind the cabin is a truly big bed, likely larger than any other pickup currently on sale.

Various interior modifications have also been made. For example, there is now an absolutely massive center console wrapped in leather. The cabin has also been equipped with a TV screen in the rear.

In terms of mechanicals, the truck is powered by a 5.9-liter Cummins diesel V8 coupled to a five-speed manual transmission. The seller notes that the truck has a solid front axle with link-coil suspension, a solid rear axle with longitudinal leaf springs, a stainless steel exhaust system, front stabilizer bar, heavy-duty shocks, and a 35-gallon fuel tank.

The truck has been listed for $31,999. That’s quite a lot of money, but isn’t entirely unreasonable given all the work performed on the vehicle.

How Can A Ram 1500 Truck Have A Better Drag Coefficient Than A Human?

Written by admin

Arthur C. Clark once said that any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic, and that certainly seems to be the case with the black magic studied by aerodynamicists.

That means that we mere mortals often get things wrong when it comes to describing aerodynamics. That difficulty is particularly apparent when it comes to the “drag coefficient” (Cd), much to Jason Cammissa‘s chagrin.

As the YouTuber puts it, the coefficient has nothing to do with size. For example, a person doing a mid belly flop has a drag coefficient of around 1, while a Ram 1500 pickup truck has a Cd of 0.36. So, it’s less about the size than the shape of the object moving through the air.

Fortunately, you don’t need to understand how the drag coefficient is calculated to understand what it’s describing. Which is a blessing, because understanding two times the force of drag divided by the mass density of the fluid times the flow speed squared times the reference area (i.e. the drag coefficient equation) is asking for too much from my tiny monkey brain.

Conceptually, the Cd can be understood as how big the frontal area of a vehicle “appears” to the air. So a vehicle with a drag coefficient of 0.5 would appear half as big to the air as a vehicle of identical size with a drag coefficient of 1.0. For what it’s worth, a cube has a Cd of 1.05 but a cube rotated by 45 degrees (so the pointy corner hits the air first) has a Cd of 0.8.

In Cammissa’s example, their drag coefficients mean that a Tesla Model X is smaller than a Lotus Elise as far as the wind is concerned. And now you can avoid being thrown off a tall building by an irritable “know-it-all.”

Hennessey’s Mammoth 900 TRX Sends 728 HP To The Rear Wheels

Written by admin

No matter how powerful and fast a vehicle may be from the factory, it will never be enough for the folks from Hennessy Performance. Case in point, the tuner’s 2021 Ram 1500 TRX-based Mammoth 900.

As standard, the 1500 TRX comes outfitted with a 6.2-liter supercharged Hellcat V8 pumping out 702 hp and 650 lb-ft (881 Nm) of torque. Not only does this make the TRX the most powerful pickup of its kind, but it also means the truck can out-accelerate some very impressive sports cars.

In tuning the truck Hennessey has equipped it with a lower pulley and upper pulley upgrade, fitted a ported supercharger snout, high-flow fuel injectors, high-flow air induction system and crank-case ventilation system, and tweaked the ECU. On paper, these modifications result in 912 hp and 873 lb-ft (1,184 Nm) of torque at the crank. Translated to the wheels, this results in 728 hp and 679 lb-ft (921 Nm).

For those after even more performance, Hennessey offers a Mammoth 1000 upgrade package that delivers 1,012 hp and 969 lb-ft (1,314 Nm) of torque and sports a new supercharger, stainless steel headers, and a high-flow exhaust, in addition to the upgrades of the Mammoth 900.

As impressive as all that sounds, Hennessey won’t stop there. In fact, it is creating a 6×6 version of the Ram 1500 TRX complete with Mopar’s 7.0-liter Hellephant V8 crate engine tweaked to produce 1,200 hp.

2020 Ram Heavy Duty Limited Black Edition Embraces The Blackout Trend

Written by admin

The blackout trend continues as Ram has introduced the 2020 Heavy Duty Limited Black Edition.

Billed as a “sophisticated, monochromatic appearance package that appeals to a significant segment of luxury truck buyers,” the model has a black grille, black door handles and black headlight bezels.

The dark theme continues elsewhere as there are black mirrors, matte black badges and black aluminum wheels. Speaking of the latter, the wheels measure 20-inches on standard models and 17-inches on duallies.

There doesn’t appear to be any interior changes, but the range-topping Limited trim comes nicely equipped with heated / ventilated front seats, heated rear seats and a 12-inch Uconnect infotainment system. The model also has a dual-zone automatic climate control system, a 10-speaker premium audio system, leather and genuine wood trim.

Under the hood, there is an assortment of petrol and diesel engines. A 6.4-liter HEMI V8 comes standard and it produces 410 hp (306 kW / 416 PS) and 429 lb-ft (582 Nm) of torque.

Customers can also opt for a 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel inline-six. In base form, the engine develops 370 hp (276 kW / 375 PS) and 850 lb-ft (1,152 Nm) of torque. There’s also a high output version with 400 hp (276 kW / 406 PS) and 1,000 lb-ft (1,356 Nm) of torque.

The Black Edition is available with rear- and four-wheel drive, and can tow up to 35,100 lbs (15,921 kg) when properly equipped.

The Black Edition is available in 2500 and 3500 configurations, and will be arriving at dealerships in the third quarter. Pricing starts at $62,745 which is just $1,095 more than the Ram 2500 Limited.
