2022 Lexus NX Revealed Looking A Whole Lot Better Inside And Out, Gets PHEV Too

Written by admin

Lexus is embarking on a major product push, which will see the brand launch 20 new or updated vehicles by 2025. That offensive is kicking into high gear tonight with the unveiling of the 2022 NX.

Redesigned from the ground up, the 2022 Lexus NX looks like a crossover-ified version of the IS sport sedan. It features an all-new front fascia with a revised spindle grille that has “tall U-shaped blocks” for a more three-dimensional appearance.

The grille is flanked by vertical air intakes and redesigned headlights with integrated daytime running lights. This is a notable change as it means the NX no longer resembles a rolling Nike advertisement.

Continuing down the sides, we can see evolutionary bodywork and a distinctive shoulder line. The rear end is also familiar, but it adopts full-width taillights and “Lexus” lettering that replaces the circular “L” emblem.

An Improved Interior With An All-New Touchscreen Infotainment System

Moving inside, the cabin has been completely reimagined with higher quality materials and a modern design.

The stars of the show are a 7-inch digital instrument cluster and a next-generation infotainment system known as the Lexus Interface. We’ll discuss the latter in a separate article, but the touchscreen infotainment system has 9.8- and 14-inch displays as well as a handful of physical knobs and buttons.

Putting the infotainment system aside, the 2022 NX benefits from improved front seats which come standard with heating. Owners will also find more head and legroom as well as additional cargo space.

Full details will be announced closer to launch, but the NX can be equipped with a handful of new options including a panoramic moonroof and a digital rearview mirror. Customers can also get a 10-inch head-up display, a wireless smartphone charger and heated rear seats. The model also offers “thematic ambient illumination” with a choice of 14 themes – such as Rain Forest, Waterfall and Sunset – as well as 64 colors.

New Safety Tech Including “Digital” Door Handles

On the safety front, the 2022 NX comes with “Digital Latch” push-button door handles with Safe Exit Assist technology. During a demonstration last week, Lexus showed us how the system automatically prevents people from opening doors if a cyclist or vehicle is approaching from behind within close proximity. It’s an interesting feature and can be manually overridden if needed.

Besides the trick door handles, the NX benefits from the latest Lexus Safety System+ 3.0. It includes Intelligent High Beams, Road Sign Assist, Lane Assistance, and an updated Pre-Collision System with Oncoming Vehicle Detection which can activate automatic emergency braking to help avoid a frontal collision. Other highlights include Risk Avoidance Emergency Steer Assist, Left Turn Oncoming Vehicle Detection/Braking, Right/Left Turn Oncoming Pedestrian Detection/Braking and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control with Curve Speed Management.

The 2022 NX Features Lexus’ First Plug-In Hybrid Powertrain

Under the hood, there’s an assortment of different engines including a new 2.5-liter four-cylinder that produces an estimated 203 hp (151 kW / 206 PS) and 184 lb-ft (249 Nm) of torque.  It’s connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission, which enables the front-wheel drive NX 250 to run from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 8.2 seconds. Opting for all-wheel drive increases traction, but also results in a slower 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) time of 8.6 seconds.

If that’s not fast enough, there’s a new turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder with an estimated 275 hp (205 kW / 279 PS) and 317 lb-ft (430 Nm) of torque. It’s paired to an eight-speed automatic and allows the NX 350 to accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 6.8 seconds.

Customers looking for something more eco-friendly can opt for the 2022 NX 350h. It has a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and an all-wheel drive system with a rear electric motor.

This setup gives the crossover a combined output of 239 hp (178 kW / 242 PS), which is a 20% increase over the current hybrid. Thanks to the extra power, the dash to 60 mph (96 km/h) is cut to 5.7 seconds which is an improvement of 1.5 seconds. If that wasn’t impressive enough, the NX 350h has an estimated fuel economy rating of 36 mpg combined, which is 6 mpg better than the outgoing model.

The big news for 2022 is the addition of a plug-in hybrid powertrain. It’s a first for Lexus and the NX 450h+ has a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, a lithium-ion battery pack and a rear-mounted electric motor.

If that setup sounds familiar, it should be as the powertrain largely carries over from the Toyota RAV4 Prime.  There are a handful of subtle differences, but the Lexus will have an electric-only range of approximately 36 miles (58 km) and an “EV output equivalent to a 2.0-liter engine.” The crossover will also be capable of hitting 60 mph (96 km/h) in approximately six seconds.

When the battery is depleted, it can be fully recharged in approximately 4.5 hours with the standard 3.3 kW onboard charger. However, customers can get an optional 6.6 kW charger which reduces the time to 2.5 hours.

The NX450h+ comes with a newly developed full-time AWD system, which promises to provide a confident and sporty driving experience. The company didn’t say much about it, but noted front and rear torque distribution will be optimized according to driving conditions.

The plug-in hybrid also has a Predictive Efficient Drive system, which “learns driving habits, predicts the expected roadway ahead and analyzes real-time traffic reports to optimize charging and discharging of the hybrid battery.” The system learns as you drive, and can predict when and where the vehicle is likely to stop or slow down. As Lexus explained, “when the NX approaches a location where the driver has slowed or stopped in the past, and the driver releases the accelerator pedal, Predictive Efficient Drive increases regenerative braking, allowing more efficient energy to be recovered and recharged into the hybrid battery.”

A New Platform And An F Sport Variant

The 2022 Lexus NX rides on the TNGA-K platform and features a lower center of gravity as well as improved torsional rigidity thanks to laser peening welding. Engineers also beefed up the rear hatch area and focused on improving driving dynamics.  It’s also worth noting the redesigned model is lighter than its predecessor as some variants drop around 200 lbs (91 kg).

Speaking of performance, the F Sport package returns and includes an active variable suspension with performance dampers. The package also adds a revised grille, sportier bumpers and 20-inch gloss black aluminum wheels.

The sporty styling continues in the cabin as drivers will find two-tone sport seats, aluminum pedals and perforated NuLuxe upholstery. The F Sport is also distinguished by a sport steering wheel, special scuff plates and Dark Graphite Aluminum accents.

The 2022 Lexus NX will go into production in the third quarter and pricing will be announced closer to launch.

Watch These Hilariously Slow Indian Classics Try To Break Into The 23s At The Drag Strip

Written by admin

If your YouTube feed is anything like mine it’s littered with drag race suggestions. Mostly new car head-to-heads from the likes of CarWow, plus some wild modified face-offs courtesy of Hoonigan.

Even bone-stock regular production cars are so fast these days it’s rare to watch any race that takes longer than 13 seconds. So you might assume that watching one where the cars needs twice as long to get down the strip would be deadly dull. But as this race from Autocar India proves, that’s definitely not the case.

The two cars in question are giants from India’s automotive past. One is the Hindustan Ambassador, which incredibly, remained in production from 1958 to 2014, and at one time accounted for two out of every three cars sold in India. The other is the Fiat 1100D, which was built under license in India between 1964 and 2000, again proving just how much the country has changed in the last few years.

The 1980s-spec Ambassador’s mighty 1.8-liter engine thumps out 60 hp, theoretically giving it a big advantage over the Fiat which belongs to presenter Cyrus Dhabhar and, despite a bunch of mods including a hot cam and sports exhaust, squeaks out just 50hp. But factor in the Fiat’s tiny 1951 lbs (885 kg) curb weight and the odds tip back the other way.

Despite a slow start (and a comically long-throw gearchange) the “Ambi” soon overhauls the Fiat in race one, crossing the line in 24.27 seconds to the 1100’s 25.29 best effort.

But with his pride hurt enough to persuade him to get a bit more brutal with his pride and joy, Dhabhar works the Fiat hard and turns race two into a proper nail-biter. And the advantage of watching cars this slow is the tension lasts so much longer. We’ll not spoil the result, but let’s just say it’s a lot more fun than the numbers would have you believe. Who else would like to see more seriously old cars hitting the strip on YouTube?

Moleskine Unveils New Lamborghini Notebook, For The Poetic Supercar Owner

Written by admin

My own personal stereotype about a Lamborghini owner is that they don’t have many thoughts worth writing down, but here to bust my prejudices is the latest collaboration between the supercar manufacturer and Moleskine.

Famed for its simple, sturdy, portable notebooks, Moleskine has been a favorite brand of writers everywhere and this partnership with Lamborghini has seen it turn to artist Emiliano Ponzi for their latest creation.

The artist is known for his bold, textured artwork that mixes strong graphic composition with an economy of lines. Ponzi has been featured in publications, books, and newspapers working with clients like The New York Times, Le Monde, The New Yorker, Louis Vuitton, Cartier, and Der Spiegel.

“It’s about sensations,” says Ponzi. “And I thought, okay, I want to transfer to the audience the beautiful and fulfilling sensation of driving a Lamborghini.”

The illustration he ultimately designed for the Lamborghini notebook spans the outside and inside covers and tells the story of a Lamborghini Huracan EVO on a journey that starts in the city, drives through the country, and ends with a beautiful sunset.

“This creative endeavor aims to highlight the poetic, metaphysical aspect of the dreams and emotions associated with driving, owning and being accompanied by a Lamborghini, giving a logical order to a unique story,” writes the automaker. “The Lamborghini provides the color in both dream journeys and real ones, in the context of open spaces and urban settings.”

If you’re feeling inspired by this journey and the endless possibilities promised by an empty notebook, you can pick one of these Moleskines up at Lamborghini dealers, at the company’s boutique in Sant’Agatha Bolognese, or on its online store starting this month.

Tiff Needell Experiences The 613 HP All-Electric Rallycross Car

Written by admin

While rally cars have historically been all about popping engine notes and fire-breathing exhausts, the all-electric Projekt E Rallycross car developed by STARD shows that you can still have fun in a rally car without all of those sounds.

Unveiled last year prior to the start of the electric rallycross championship, STARD’s car has a powertrain with no less than three electric motors that combine to pump out 613 hp and 740 lb-ft (1,002 Nm) of torque. Tiff Needell from Lovecars was recently given the opportunity to put the car through its paces and was very impressed with what he found.

The car features a two-speed transmission and can hit a top speed of 149 mph (240 km/h). However, what is most impressive is how this thing lurches off the line, pushing the driver back into their seat despite spinning up all four tires. Which, of course, is to be expected as it will hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in roughly 2 seconds.

While the car weighs more than a ICE-powered Rallycross car, most of this weight is located low down meaning it doesn’t negatively impact the handling. Throughout the test, Needell powerslides the car through various corners of the track in Greinbach, Austria and seems to be having an absolute ball while driving it.

Given how much power the car has, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that it can’t travel all that far on a single charge. However, STARD has already thought of that and has designed the battery pack in such a way that it can be removed and swapped in just 15 minutes.

Jeremy Clarkson Trades The Grand Tour’s Cars For… Sheep?

Written by admin

Jeremy Clarkson is best known for his automotive exploits. Be it on Top Gear or The Grand Tour, he’s always alongside his co-presenters Richard Hammond and James May. But he’s no stranger to presenting solo, with treats such as “Clarkson’s Motorworld” and “Inventions That Changed The World”.

And with the release of the first trailer for “Clarkson’s Farm” on Amazon Prime, we’re already looking forward to a different style of hijinks and japery.

In the new series, fast cars and flying around the world have been replaced with a love for the great outdoors and sticking to a patch of 1000 acres. It follows Clarkson’s exploits as he learns how to manage the perhaps aptly named the Diddly Squat Farm. In the trailer, we see him piloting a Lamborghini tractor, being kicked by a sheep, and coming to terms with salmonella testing.

“Jeremy Clarkson is a journalist, a broadcaster, and a man who travels the world to slide sideways in supercars while shouting,” says Amazon. “He is not a farmer, which is unfortunate because he’s bought a 1000-acre farm in the English countryside and decided to run it himself, despite knowing nothing whatsoever about farming”.

In addition to getting to grips with the intricacies of country living, Clarkson and the production team also had to deal with the worst farming weather in decades, as well as the disruptive force that is the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking to Drivetribe earlier this year, Clarkson said: “I’m looking forward to people’s reactions to it because it’s like nothing I’ve done before. Nobody falls over, nobody catches fire, nobody explodes. It’s a quiet genteel look at how farming is done and how I react to it. It’s a nice program. And there are some amazing facts about farming.” Clarkson’s farm will be released on Friday, June 11 on Amazon Prime Video.

Lamborghini Huracan STO Is Being Tested At The Nurburgring

Written by admin

Prior to the Lamborghini Huracan Performante being unveiled at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, the Italian car manufacturer revealed that it had lapped the Nurburgring in a jaw-dropping 6:52.01, a production car lap record at the time.

In the time since the Performante’s launch, the Huracan range has been facelifted and is now topped out by the STO. Curiously, Lamborghini has made no mention of a Nurburgring lap time with the Huracan STO in the six months since its unveiling but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t been testing the hardcore model at the famed circuit.

During a recent industry pool session at ‘Ring, a Huracan STO wearing a black and yellow paint scheme was spotted completing a series of laps. While most of the laps were performed at relatively slow speeds and in wet or damp conditions, it’s clear the Lamborghini is fine-tuning the car’s on track performance before customer deliveries begin. Will it look to set a flying lap of the Nurburgring with it? We will just have to wait and see.

Like the Huracan Evo, the STO is powered by a 5.2-liter naturally aspirated V10 pumping out 631 hp and 417 lb-ft (565 Nm), all of which is sent through the rear wheels. The car weighs 95 lbs (43 kg) less than the Performante and has been fitted with a host of bold new aerodynamic components inspired by the Squadra Corse race car, including flared arches, a towering rear wing and a unique diffuser.

World’s Blackest Ferrari SF90 Stradale “Vantablack” Looks A Real Life Cartoon

Written by admin

Ferrari must have thought the SF90 looks too shiny, so they gave it a Vantablack (or so it appears) finish. At least that’s what we think, because this video, shot in Maranello, Italy, which is the home of the Prancing Horse, shows the supercar wearing the blackest of black colors.

If this is indeed Vantablack that was introduced in 2014 by Surrey NanoSystems, it’s capable of absorbing 99.965 percent of light. This makes 3D objects look as if they were 2D, and one of the first (or perhaps ‘the’ first) vehicle painted in Vantablack was a BMW X6 two years ago.

Review: The SF90 Stradale Is Unlike Any Other Ferrari Ever Built

Since then, we have seen other cars, like the Mitsubishi Lancer, wear this strange yet captivating paint finish, and this SF90 is, from what we know, the first real exotic dressed in it. So, what do we have here? One explanation is this is a one-off commissioned by a customer. There is also the possibility that Ferrari might be testing it for possible future implementation or the expansion of its color palette.

As for the SF90 Stradale, it entered production in 2019 as the Italian firm’s first plug-in hybrid supercar. It uses an electrified powertrain that combines the company’s turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine, rated at 769 HP and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) of torque, with three electric motors and a new eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The total output of 986 HP rockets it to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 2.5 seconds and up to 211 mph (340 km/h). It also has a maximum all-electric range of 15.5 miles (25 km).

Take A Detailed Look At The Only Olive Green Porsche Carrera GT

Written by admin

The Porsche Carrera GT is a very special car but thanks to a unique paint job, this example is even more unique.

Adorning the exterior of this Carrera GT is a shade of green known as Dark Olive Metallic that was ordered through Porsche’s Paint-To-Sample program. YouTuber TheTFJJ recently had the opportunity to check out the car up-close.

According to the YouTuber, the car forms part of the Octane Collection in the UK and the Dark Olive Metallic paint is contrasted by an Ascot Brown interior that has luscious leather across the seats, transmission tunnel, dashboard, and steering wheel.

This thing really is a sight to behold and in addition to filming the car’s exterior and interior, the YouTuber was also able to perfectly capture some of the sounds of its glorious 5.7-liter naturally aspirated V10 engine.

Interestingly, this isn’t the only green Carrera GT that exists. In 2019, Porsche Classic was tasked with restoring and upgrading the Carrera GT owned by a U.S. collector. In that case, Porsche completely disassembled the car and either replaced or refurbished all of its parts. It then sprayed on an Oak Green Metallic paint that is a touch brighter than Dark Olive Metallic. Porsche Classic completed its work by painting the eye-catching five-spoke wheels in gold.

Porsche only ever built 1,270 examples of the Carrera GT and in addition to sporting one of the best-sounding engines of any production car, the German supercar is rear-wheel drive and has a six-speed manual, making it a proper driver’s machine.

Hennessey’s Mammoth 900 TRX Sends 728 HP To The Rear Wheels

Written by admin

No matter how powerful and fast a vehicle may be from the factory, it will never be enough for the folks from Hennessy Performance. Case in point, the tuner’s 2021 Ram 1500 TRX-based Mammoth 900.

As standard, the 1500 TRX comes outfitted with a 6.2-liter supercharged Hellcat V8 pumping out 702 hp and 650 lb-ft (881 Nm) of torque. Not only does this make the TRX the most powerful pickup of its kind, but it also means the truck can out-accelerate some very impressive sports cars.

In tuning the truck Hennessey has equipped it with a lower pulley and upper pulley upgrade, fitted a ported supercharger snout, high-flow fuel injectors, high-flow air induction system and crank-case ventilation system, and tweaked the ECU. On paper, these modifications result in 912 hp and 873 lb-ft (1,184 Nm) of torque at the crank. Translated to the wheels, this results in 728 hp and 679 lb-ft (921 Nm).

For those after even more performance, Hennessey offers a Mammoth 1000 upgrade package that delivers 1,012 hp and 969 lb-ft (1,314 Nm) of torque and sports a new supercharger, stainless steel headers, and a high-flow exhaust, in addition to the upgrades of the Mammoth 900.

As impressive as all that sounds, Hennessey won’t stop there. In fact, it is creating a 6×6 version of the Ram 1500 TRX complete with Mopar’s 7.0-liter Hellephant V8 crate engine tweaked to produce 1,200 hp.

Watch BRM’s 591 HP V16 Flamethrower Of An Engine Fire Up

Written by admin

British Racing Motors billed itself as the original British Formula 1 team and the brand is back, intent on building three continuation models of the 1950 Type 15 V16 Formula 1 car that brought it fame.

The team has just released footage of its supercharged 1.5-liter V16 engine firing up and spitting flames in testing.

“We didn’t want to push it too hard on the dyno,” Martin Smith, chief engine technician for the engine rebuild. “But even so we estimate we got about 550 BHP at 10,000 RPM and 2.5 psi – which is a huge step forward as we continue to build our experience and understanding of this astonishing engine.”

The engine will rev to at least 12,000 rpm and put out 591 HP. The one seen in the video is an original and was rebuilt by Hall and Hall, BRM’s technical partners, as a form of research before three new ones are produced to original spec.

“There is little margin for error with these parts, right down to 1,000th of a millimeter,” said Rick Hall, Hall and Hall founder. “For example, we had some earlier issues with the Rolls Royce supercharger, which we had to rebuild from scratch, so through trial and error we are flushing out these issues and also learning a great deal about how this engine behaves.”

The engine seen here was last run in 1999 at BRM’s 50th-anniversary celebration. It was driven by Jose Froilan Gonzalez, a veteran Formula 1 driver who drove with BRM and Ferrari, among others, between 1950 and 1960. During the demonstration run, though, he accidentally over-revved the engine, damaging it in the process.

The three cars that BRM builds will use original VIN numbers from the ’50s. These were allocated to the racing program in the era, but BRM never built them because of changing regulations in the sport. It’s a similar path to that taken by Jaguar when it built new XKSS continuation models

The first car has been commissioned by John Owen, the 81-year-old son of Sir Alfred Owen, BRM’s original owner, and is expected to be delivered later this year.
